How do I split a restaurant receipt by item, with tax and tip?
As of 29 Oct 2026
Open SplitEasy on an iPhone or iPad, scan the receipt (or type it in), and tap each item to give it to one person, a few people or the whole table. Tax and tip are then split in proportion to what each person ordered, and every person's total adds up to the receipt total. It is free for bills of up to 4 people and needs no sign-up.
The 4 steps
- Add people. Type names; friends do not need the app.
- Scan. Photograph the receipt, or type the items in by hand.
- Assign. Tap an item, then tap who had it. Shared dishes can go to several people.
- Send each share. Send every person their total through WhatsApp, iMessage or any chat.
Example
Example from the SplitEasy home page: a dinner for 4 with a total of $426.00 including an 18% tip of $60.48. Mira pays $98.40, Jules $112.20, Theo $124.50 and Anouk $90.90. The four shares add up to $426.00.
How tax and tip are shared
In proportion to each person's items. If your items are 30% of the subtotal, you pay 30% of the tax and 30% of the tip, instead of an equal share. Totals add up to the receipt total, also in currencies without decimals such as IDR and JPY.
How quick scan works, and its limit
Quick scan reads line items, quantities and prices from a photo, using Apple Vision on your iPhone, so the scan runs on your device. It works best on clean printed receipts. If a line is wrong, fix it by hand. Free includes unlimited manual entry and quick scans.
Long receipts
For a long receipt, Pro lets you add 2 photos; Pro+ has no limit on photos. See the Pricing section for current prices.
Using it in Indonesia
IDR is one of the 10 supported currencies, and you can share each person's amount through WhatsApp.
What it does not do
No Android app, no web app, and no money transfer: SplitEasy shows who owes what.
